The Joy of Lake August

Nicola Lawrence is delighted to have been approached by Los Angeles designer, Alexis Hartman, to offer her Lake August collection of fabrics and wallpapers. Nicola has the samples from the collection on her desk and they are exquisite - both in print and to touch. There has been much interest in the Lake August collection since Nicola first introduced it on Instagram - including from interior designers both in Australia and the Northern Hemisphere.
Endlessly inspired by the natural world; a love of land, sea and sky is reflected in the Lake August designs. According to Alexis, the foundation of the Lake August brand is in the beauty and integrity of well-made things. With each pattern, product or collection she continues to explore natural materials and traditional techniques.
Sustainability is important to Alexis and to this end a portion of each sale supports the Land Stewardship Project, an American organisation which promotes sustainable agriculture and communities. Linen is sourced from a five-generation family-owned Belgian manufacturer and is easily grown in that climate without the use of pesticides, has nil irrigation and minimal soil enhancement.
The creative process for Lake August designs always starts with a pencil or paintbrush. Patterns are translated from drawings, paintings and hand-carved blocks into silkscreens, and then screen printed by hand onto fabric or wallpaper, using water based inks.
This collection looks beautiful in pictures, but the product to hand is exquisite. Beautifully tactile and a gorgeous palette and it is with pleasure that Nicola Lawrence introduces this line to Australians.
